Volunteering with Magic Hands  Magic Hands is an eight-unit program specifically designed to increase self-esteem and self-confidence within children.  Children learn in a hands-on way – through the metaphor of magic and the artistic process– that anything is possible. The first five weeks of our program teaches children the art of magic and how to present it;on the last day, participants stage their very own “Big Magic Show” for invited guests.

Volunteer's Role A key component of our Magic Hands program is volunteerism. We have a professional magician and teaching assistant to lead the program but it is through hands-on volunteers support where our participants really thrive.

Here’s how: first, our magician performs the trick so everyone can see and feel the impact of the magic trick.  Next, our magician breaks the trick down and teaches the group how to do it.  To reinforce the mechanics of the trick, we break the class into groups and have volunteers pick up the teaching thread and to assist the children with “hand-on-hand” learning.

Being a volunteer is fun and rewarding.  It is so important for Magic Hands Participants to receive support and encouragement by volunteers, so we really appreciate your participation.  Children value “peer” acknowledgement and blossom with their own self-confidence and self-esteem.  Seeing your participants benefit from your direct encouragement and assistance is very rewarding.  You will see that the simple act of “being there” for the young participants can make a real difference to their lives.

In addition to the intrinsic rewards, we have a lot of fun at Magic Hands!  As a volunteer you will not only learn secrets, but you will find yourself learning about magic as a performance art.  You will learn tips on how to create story lines and transfer your new knowledge to your group of participants.  And that’s just week four!  By the end of the session, you will learn and help your group of participants with how to address an audience, how to manage audience volunteers, how to script a trick and even how to structure a show.

All we ask… As a volunteer, you agree to commit to two-hour blocks, once a week for eight weeks.  You are welcome to volunteer for as many sessions (eight-week teaching cycle) as you like and are able to during available sessions. We ask that our volunteers bring a positive attitude with some common sense.  Magic Hands is a really fun program and together, we can build something to be proud of in your community!
