Magicana has designed a program specifically for the senior citizen community called Senior Sorcery. The goal of the program is to bring live theatre in the form of magic shows to isolated seniors. The program also strives to actively engage seniors and to empower them by giving them the ability to invite their family and friends to a special event. The program is also designed to bridge or connect the generations by offering a group activity that all can participate in, enjoy and most importantly, talk about later.
The program was also designed with up-and-coming magicians in mind. Senior Sorcery provides an inviting and appreciative environment for aspiring artists to service while fulfilling a much-needed entertainment niche with the senior community. Our program also encourages artists to raise the bar on their performance in their artistic merit and quality of show, achieving a win-win scenario for all parties.
In 2005 Magicana, in partnership with Smile Theatre, launched our inaugural show, Hocus Pocus -- a fifty-minute program of mirth, mystery and magic presented to seniors in retirement homes and recreational centers in the Greater Toronto Area and surrounding areas at various times throughout the year. Now the program has evolved to include other shows and programming including our latest installment, Strolling Sorcery and An Afternoon of Magic.
Hocus Pocus: An afternoon of Mirth, Mystery and Magic is highly participatory and removes the traditional “fourth wall” of theatre. This style of show injects a different kind of personality and vitality, opposed to other forms of theatre offered. The unique interactive nature has resonated strongly with the centers Magicana has worked with. |
