As with all of its productions, Magicana has assembled a great team including David Ben, Patrick Watson, John Lang, David Rayfield and Bonnie Beecher.  Magicana will provide tour logistical management in association with Parallel Production Services. 

 

David Ben (co-author, performer) has been described by Christopher Newton – former artistic director of the Shaw Festival - as one of Canada's most unusual talents. He has performed throughout the United States, Canada, England, and Japan. He is co-creator and performer of The Conjuror (Shaw Festival, Theatre ROM, Isabel Bader Theatre), The Conjuror's Suite (Salon ROM, Charlottetown Festival) and is recognized as one of the finest sleight-of-hand magicians in the world. He currently serves as the Artistic and Executive Director of Magicana.

Patrick Watson (co-author/director) is one of Canada's broadcasting treasures. His television and documentary productions have ranged from writing and directing The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau to his best-known Canadian series This Hour Has Seven Days. In 1964 he became the first North American producer to film in The People's Republic of China.

Patrick is a past chairman of the CBC, and has received numerous honorary degrees and international television awards. He has also been named Companion of the Order of Canada.  His memoirs, “This Hour has Seven Decades”, was published by MacArthur Publishing.

 

John Lang (music composer/arranger) has composed numerous musical works for Canadian dance icon Robert Desrossier as well as works for film and television. Credits include music composed for the critically acclaimed documentary "A Conjuror In The Making" for Adrienne Clarkson Presents.

He also composed music for "Dai Vernon - The Spirit of Magic", "The Strange Genius of Stewart James" and the recent "Travelogue" featuring Penn & Teller for Associate Producers and for “The Conjuror” at the Isabel Bader Theatre.

 

David Rayfield (Set Design) has extensive experience as a set and costume designer and scenic artist.  Selected design credits include The Baltimore Waltz (Tarragon Theatre) (Theatre Direct Canada's) Little Sister, Hippopotamus Tea and A Secret Life for which he was nominated for a Dora Award.  (Theatre Beyond Words) Spud Trek and Civilization and Its Discontents, (The Freud Project).

He has been the head scenic artist for Soulpepper Theatre Company over the past four seasons and has painted for Opera Atelier, The National Ballet, Toronto Operetta Theatre and many other companies throughout his career.

Most recently he designed the set and costumes for Theatre Direct Canada's production of Petra, which received a Dora nomination for Outstanding Production in the Theatre for Young Audiences division.

 

Bonnie Beecher (Lighting Designer) - Tricks is Bonnie’s sixth production with David Ben and Patrick Watson.

Her lighting designs for theatre, opera and dance have been seen across Canada and, more recently in Europe. Recent credits include Timon of Athens for The Stratford Festival, Carmina Burana for Ballet British Columbia, Cold Meat Party for Factory Theatre, By the Way Miss for Theatre Direct, and several productions for the Mannheim Nationaltheater in Germany including Broken Verse, Collective Sonatas and Topographical Layers for the Ballet, and Tristan und Isolde for the Opera, Tancredi for The Canadian Opera Company and Hedda Gabler for Volcano.  Bonnie lives in Toronto with her husband Glenn Davidson and their sons Jacob and Oliver.
