What is MasterClass?
[MasterWorkshop]
MasterClass is a program for those interested in raising their magical expertise to a whole new level of art and practice. Participants are challenged to broadening their magical abilities through this five-unit program - held once a month for five months at Toronto location, led by sleight-of-hand expert, David Ben.
Each class covers a different theory and practical knowledge focused on performance techniques and methods. Classes are held Sunday mornings at 9 AM and finish by 12 Noon.
What will you get out of it?
Participants have reported that they achieved more than satisfactory results with routines created in class; further, participants also felt they received considerable value for investment. Here are two perspectives:
“In the course ... I rehearsed and performed three tricks. Those three tricks were analyzed, dissected and honed to a level of splendid simplicity. One trick in particular, was taken to a new world-class level. No book, and no DVD, can improve performance, presentation and idea behind a trick like MasterClass.”
-- B. Kish
“With David’s guidance my eyes were opened to possibilities that I would not have previously considered. The classes taught me how to toss dealer instructions and create a personalized routine that matches my setting and audience. We learned how to provide the audience with an experience rather than a trick.”
-- T. Jackson
How does it work?
Instead of direct lecturing for three hours straight on just tricks, David Ben, program leader, explains his theory and approach to magic and then applies it with examples and exercises that participants learn together as a group. Participants also pick a trick to work on individually, where again, one applies the unique methods that is learnt in class.
“It is an incredibly refreshing and inspiring experience to have a professional performer teach a course balanced with both theory and practice.”
-- J. Culpepper
The group format is quite dynamic and interactive: participants watch each other perform and post-performance critiques by David. What’s interesting is how David applies the theory of the session into the magic that is performed by students. It’s quite interesting to watch classmates, because what participants find is that they develop their own "critical eye". And, with David’s coaching, participants begin to sense and flag rough posts in their own performances, thanks to watching others and hearing the input from the group.
How does it differ from other workshops and lectures?
“In an attempt to dazzle his or her audience today's young magician has all the hottest DVD's and a drawer full of magic that amounts to a lot of money spent on many tricks that they cannot perform very well. Magic lectures and workshops just add to this volume. The MasterClass is not about volume but refinement. You must perform in front of a critical eye and as daunting as that might sound, it is the only way to get better. The principles learned in the master class can be applied to that sagging dusty drawer of 'yesterdays' tricks and turn the mundane into the marvelous.”
-- B. Kish
